The EPA studies the results of air quality within specific areas and has identified areas of concern throughout the country. Indoor air quality information is readily available on their website and consistently monitored by us to identify trends in the environment.
Indoor air quality testing and inspection
When should indoor air quality be tested? Consider testing when a building has a persistent odor, past water damage, suspected hidden mold, a damp basement, HVAC concerns, or indoor air complaints that no one has been able to explain. Testing is also useful after renovations or when you want a baseline for a home or workplace.
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a core part of what Air Care & Restoration Co. does, not an add-on. Since 1992 we've investigated homes, offices, schools and healthcare spaces across Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley. Our IAQ work is led by Joe Kozacheck, whose chemistry background and specialized IAQ training shape how we sample and interpret results.
What an IAQ assessment can include
Every assessment starts with a walk-through and conversation. We then select measurements that fit the concern, rather than running every test available.
Moisture & humidity
Relative humidity, temperature and moisture readings in materials. Humidity above 60% for long periods is a common driver of mold and dust mites.
Mold spores
Air and surface sampling with laboratory analysis, compared with outdoor conditions. See mold testing.
Particulates
Respirable particles and total airborne dust, which can point to filtration, duct or construction-dust issues.
Gases & chemicals
Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and formaldehyde, plus other chemical sampling when the situation calls for it.
Ventilation
Carbon dioxide levels and airflow observations that indicate whether a space is getting enough fresh air.
HVAC-related contamination

Allergens
Dust sampling for cat, dog, cockroach and dust mite allergens, with optional rodent, mold, pollen, insect and dust-count screening.
Specialized sampling
Depending on the concern: MVOCs, ERMI dust testing, bacteria and endotoxin, sewage bacteria, fiberglass fibers, soot sourcing and wall cavity sampling.
Common reasons for IAQ testing

Mold and damp environments can contribute to allergy or respiratory symptoms in some people. IAQ testing can identify conditions in the building worth correcting, but it can't diagnose illness or promise to find the cause of a person's medical symptoms. Our home allergen screening starts at $449. It includes a visual inspection, dust sampling, accredited laboratory analysis and immunoassay screening for cat, dog, cockroach and dust mite allergens. Indoor air quality FAQs
What humidity level can contribute to mold growth?
Mold can grow on surfaces that stay damp, and indoor humidity consistently above about 60% makes that more likely, especially on cool basement walls and ducts. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
Can high humidity cause mold?
Yes. High humidity leads to condensation on cooler surfaces and keeps materials damp long enough for mold to grow, even without a leak. Dehumidification and better ventilation often solve the problem.
Can mold grow inside HVAC systems?
Yes. Cooling coils, drain pans and ductwork in attics or crawlspaces can stay damp from condensation. Because HVAC systems circulate air, we check accessible components as part of IAQ and mold investigations.
Will air quality testing tell me why I feel sick?
No test can diagnose a medical condition. IAQ testing identifies building conditions such as moisture, mold, particulates or chemicals that may be worth correcting. Your physician is the right person for medical questions.
Do air purifiers fix indoor air quality problems?
Filtration can help with particles, but it doesn't correct a moisture source, a hidden mold problem or poor ventilation. We recommend purification equipment only after the underlying causes are understood.
