Why mold is common in Lehigh Valley buildings
- Humid summers. Basements and lower levels often stay above 60% relative humidity without dehumidification.
- Older masonry foundations. Stone, brick and block walls in the region's older cities can let groundwater through.
- Finished basements. Across old and new homes alike, finished lower levels can hide moisture behind drywall and carpet.
- Rivers and creeks. The Lehigh and Delaware rivers and their tributaries mean high groundwater and flood exposure in low-lying areas.
- Freeze-thaw cycles. Winter ice and spring snowmelt stress roofs, gutters and grading.

Yes. We perform mold and indoor air quality work in residential, commercial, institutional and healthcare settings.
What humidity should I keep my basement at?
The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%. Many Lehigh Valley basements need a dehumidifier to stay in that range during summer.

"We called Air Care to investigate air quality concerns in our home. They completed a very thorough inspection and immediately identified several major construction issues in our basement that were causing hidden mold growth. Air Care's mold spore tests revealed that levels were significantly elevated in our home. Air Care started remediation work very quickly to remove the incorrectly installed insulation and reinsulate everything properly using methods that would not cause mold growth. They installed new drywall and put back our built-in cabinets and ceiling tiles. Everything was as good as new!
