HVAC & Air Duct Mold Remediation
Cleaning, disinfection and replacement of contaminated ductwork
Mold in HVAC systems and ductwork
Can mold grow inside HVAC systems? Yes. Cooling coils, drain pans and ductwork can support mold when condensation or high humidity keeps them damp. Ducts running through attics, crawlspaces and unconditioned ceilings are especially prone to condensation if they are poorly insulated.
HVAC mold is different from ordinary dust in ducts. Because the system moves air through the whole building, contamination in one place can spread spores to other rooms. Air Care & Restoration Co. investigates, cleans, disinfects and, when necessary, replaces contaminated HVAC components for homes and commercial buildings in Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley.
Fix the moisture first
Mold in ductwork is always tied to moisture. Common causes include poor system design, uninsulated or under-insulated ducts in crawlspaces or attics, condensate drainage problems and water entering from outside.
If the moisture problem isn't corrected, cleaned ducts can become contaminated again. That's why HVAC mold work starts with an investigation. See mold inspection and indoor air quality testing.
How we address HVAC mold
- Metal ductwork: cleaned and disinfected in place.
- Flexible ductwork: porous and difficult to clean reliably, so contaminated flex duct is usually replaced.
- Fiberboard trunk lines: encapsulated (sealed) or replaced, depending on condition.
- Coils and drain pans: evaluated as likely moisture and growth points.
- Air purification: in-line HEPA filtration or other purification equipment when it fits the building.
Encapsulants are sometimes used when replacement isn't practical, but their effectiveness can decline over time. We'll explain the tradeoffs before recommending them.
HVAC mold vs. general duct cleaning
General air duct cleaning removes dust and debris that builds up over time. HVAC mold work is a mold remediation task: it requires finding the moisture source, containing the work and cleaning or replacing contaminated components.
Duct cleaning can improve system cleanliness, but it isn't a cure-all for health complaints. We recommend it when inspection shows it is needed.
We'll inspect accessible HVAC components and explain what we find. Inspections are a paid service.
HVAC mold FAQs
What are signs of mold in air ducts?
A musty smell when the system runs, visible growth around vents or on the air handler, and condensation on ducts are common signs. An inspection confirms whether growth is present and why.
Can you just spray the ducts?
Spraying or fogging doesn't remove growth or fix moisture. We clean, disinfect or replace components based on what they're made of and how contaminated they are.
Do you work on commercial systems?
Yes. We work on residential, commercial and healthcare HVAC systems.

"This company is exceptional. Joe, the owner, spent hours inspecting and testing our home, and his knowledge of mold and moisture problems is truly expert‑level. He identified issues we never would have found on our own. They completed a full remediation in our basement and installed a heavy‑duty dehumidifier. After a voltage problem in our home affected the unit, Joe came back personally to get it working again. That kind of dedication is hard to find. Andrew and Dylan also cleaned our ductwork and did an excellent job — professional, efficient, and equipped for serious work. If you’re dealing with mold or air quality concerns, call them. They’re thorough, honest, and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend."

"We called Air Care to investigate air quality concerns in our home. They completed a very thorough inspection and immediately identified several major construction issues in our basement that were causing hidden mold growth. Air Care's mold spore tests revealed that levels were significantly elevated in our home. Air Care started remediation work very quickly to remove the incorrectly installed insulation and reinsulate everything properly using methods that would not cause mold growth. They installed new drywall and put back our built-in cabinets and ceiling tiles. Everything was as good as new! We had an independent company come back and re-test the air quality, and mold spore levels were reduced by over 95%. We were very happy with the quality of work done by Air Care and their attention to detail and care for our home. They are highly knowledgeable in their field and took the time to explain everything to us in detail. We would highly recommend them to anyone experiencing air quality issues in their home or workplace!"

"Joe was extremely helpful and thorough in evaluating our new house for mold. We found some and another company tried to charge us 4,000 dollars to clean up one wall. Joe identified that the wall was not the contributing factor to the air mold and that the old owners must have had moldy items in the basement. We filtered the air and retested. Mold is gone. Saved us a ton of money and spent the time teaching us what to do and look for. 10/10 service."

From the start Joe was excellent in explaining what was needed, he answered all our questions and explained every process along the way. All the guys from Air Care were efficient and considerate and they went above and beyond to ensure the job was completed on time and with perfection. Jessica from the office was great as well. We couldn't be happier with the price and service we received from start to finish."
