Home Lead Inspection
Houses built before 1978 commonly used paint containing lead-based pigments (for instance lead oxide). Lead based paints have been banned since 1978 and houses built after this date should not contain any lead.
In April 2010 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency required that all renovators working in homes built before 1978 and disturbing more than six square feet of lead paint inside the home or 20 square feet outside the home be certified.
EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP Rule)
This regulation lowers the risk of lead contamination from home renovation activities.
Firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes or child care facilities built before 1978 meet the following criteria:
- Certified by the EPA
- Use certified EPA-approved renovation companies
- follow lead-safe work practices
- Abide by U.S. EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Programs
